In this weeks workshop we were given the task of creating an psychogeography project.

Pyschogeography was developed from the work of the writer Thomas de Quincey.
The concept of pyschogeography is to investigate the connection between the geographic and the human psychic mind. Such investigations explore; the way the built environment affects us as well as explorations into aspects of the cityscape that is often ignore or remain unnoticed in our everyday life.

One of the basic situationist practises is the dérive.
Dérive is to explore the urban environment in new ways, with fresh eyes, in order to experience it in a non-quotidian manner and;

"to cultivate an awareness of the ways in which everyday life is presently conditioned and controlled" (Plant. 1992)

My pyschogeography project is be based upon the Situatonist theory and is set in the town of Leicester during the day.

I asked six of my friends; Josh, Beth, Lucy, Jimmy, Luke and Aman all who I met while at DMU to tell me places in Leicester they believe hold a certain memory to them.

This memory may be due to atheistic reasons, sensuous, or just because something good happened to the individual while they were there.

Once my friends listed each of their chosen places I set of on a journey to find each of the locations in an attempt to see Leicester in a non-quotidian manner.

I captured my dérive through photography and decided to use the camera on my Iphone 4S although the camera on my phone obviously isnt the best quality I am fairly impressed with some of the photos I took.

Below is the result of my psychogeography uploaded on to an online album through an website called QuickGallery and Flickr.

At first when I began my psychogeography project I have to admit I did feel  slightly uncomfortable taking photos as some of the places were very mundane and it may off seemed peculiar to some that I was taking photos of the cinema for example and I did get quite a few looks from passer by's. However as the day continued and I began to forget the stares and did become very much entertained by the task I was given, some of the places I had to take a photo of I have seen numerous times however never actually taken the time to appreciate the whole environment which each place was situated. I also found places in Leicester I didn't even know existed even after living here for over 5 months. So overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone, as it gives you an appreciation to the little things in life such as smells and sounds allowing you an insight to places that you may of not achieved on an every day to day basis.

Hope you enjoy!
